4k video production workflow, is it worth it?

I have been working in video production professionally since 1985 and have seen many changes within the industry.  Analogue to digital was, in my opinion the first major quality leap and than came along HD with Blu-Ray discs. Now the 'buz word' in our industry is 4k, but is it simply hype for the manufacturers to get more money out of us?
I do not believe the answer is quite as simple as it may first seem. I have been filming in 4k for a few months now, but edit in 1080p HD. There are immense advantages to this workflow so what are my thoughts with the 4k hype.
Well, firstly delivering the final edit in 4k is a bit pointless at the moment as there are very few people with 4k Tv's and there are no 4k 'players' that can play 4k programmes to a 4k TV.  So 4k delivery is a non starter.
The advantages with 4k come with the filming and 1080p workflow. The acquisition has 4 times the resolution of HD so provides the editor with a lot more creative flexibility during the editing process.
4k is here to stay and I for sure will be working with 4k production workflow for many years to come. I have produced a short video that explains why here:
